System Requirements

OS macOS 13 (Ventura) or newer
Architecture Apple Silicon only — M1, M2, M3 (Intel Macs not supported)
Unified memory 8 GB minimum (terminal only) — 24–32 GB recommended if you want local AI
Disk space 300 MB free
USB USB port for serial communication — a USB-C to USB-A adapter may be needed

Local model beta — optional

The serial terminal, macros, triggers, scripting, and programmer work without any extra hardware. Running your own local model through AI Assistant (BYOK) is the demanding part. During testing, models below roughly 20B parameters could not drive the assistant's tools reliably, 20-30B is the lower edge of usable, and confident results start above 100B — which needs a lot of unified memory.

How Apple Silicon memory works for AI: Unlike PCs where CPU and GPU have separate memory pools, the M-series chip shares a single pool of unified memory between CPU and GPU. The AI model loads directly into the memory your GPU uses — the more you have, the larger the model that fits.
16 GB unified memory Fits a 20B-class model at low quantization (Q3-Q4), tight context window — below the useful range
24 GB unified memory Lower edge of usable — 20-30B models (Q4-Q5); expect occasional mistakes on tool use
32 GB unified memory 30B-class models comfortably (Q5-Q6), larger context, room for the system
64 GB+ unified memory Recommended for reliable results — 70B and larger (Q4); 100B+ needs 96-128 GB
Acceleration Apple Metal — automatically used, no configuration needed

Base 8 GB Macs cannot run models powerful enough for ComIO.Studio assistant. For day-to-day AI-assisted serial debugging, target 24–32 GB unified memory.

The assistant can be wrong. Language models misread frames, invent register numbers and write plausible code that does the wrong thing. Read what it proposes before you send it to a device — a bad Modbus write or a wrong firmware flash can damage equipment or stop a machine.
